Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which she orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992.

Our Topic this term is The Great the Bold and the Brave

The history of western civilisation begins with the Greeks and the Romans. Their expanding empires helped to spread ideas about architecture, food, entertainment, literature, science, medicine and politics across the globe. As their empires ended, other cultures rose to prominence, absorbing and passing on their own ideas and cultures – creating the world we know today.

We will need to be historians, geographers, musicians and artists to investigate and develop our understanding of different historical civilisations and their impact on our world.

What were some of the biggest contributions of these civilisations? How do their legacies impact upon the world we live in today?

Spellings:
Log on to Lexia – see link below.

Also in the home pack, there are two spelling lists. These are words the children should be able to spell by the end of their primary education. They can practise these spellings in a variety of ways:

Ransom notes – Using magazines or newspapers, find the letters you need, cut them up and stick/place them in order to spell the word.

Rainbow words – Choose a coloured pencil or pen and write the spelling word. Then pick another colour and write over the top. Repeat until you have used seven colours.

Bubble/Graffiti writing – Practise the spelling words by drawing the words in as many different ways as you can.

Times Tables:
Log on to Times Tables Rockstars and see how many levels you can beat.

Also there is a Multiplication grid in the pack which will help children practise their times tables. This is an important skill to practise.
